Web of Science: find important scientific information

The Web of Science platform consists of a number of databases that can be used separately or combined. They contain bibliographic literature references, additional metadata and citations of a large number of scientific research publications worldwide and in all fields of science. They include journals, books, proceedings, datasets and preprints. A preprint is a version of a research paper or result prior to the peer review process.

The scientific output is selected by expert editors of Web of Science. They select the most influential publications, independent of publishers or research institutes. Our licence provides access to Web of Science content from 1980 onwards.

There are extensive options to conduct sophisticated searches for scientific information and to discover trends and patterns, as citations establish links between related literature.
Cited reference searching allows you to enter a known work, publication or author (it does not have to be scientific literature) to see which more current literature refers to it.
You can also search for researchers.

When searching for documents, there are all kinds of specific fields but the most commonly used are: Topic (then you search the title, summary and keywords), and All Fields (then you search the entire record). Advanced search offers the possibility of combining previous searches. Extended searches can also be made using Boolean and proximity operators, truncation (*), the use of parentheses and double quotes (for exact searching). Download this handy Quick Reference Guide with an overview of all features.

If you look at an article after a search, you will see the bibliographic description with an abstract and both the cited literature (cited references), and references to later published articles (citations). Related records provides substantively related articles based on overlap in citations. The search result can be sorted in various ways, including relevance, date and number of citations. And further refinement can be done via Quick Filters, publication type, year, Open Access and Sustainable Development Goals, among others. The results can be shared or exported, for instance to a reference management tool such as RefWorks. The Analyze Results and Citation Reports options provide a graphical representation that can also be exported.

Web of Science itself does not contain full text content, but thanks to our tools such as Find it @ H/Library, you can still access a lot of full text. To do this, use Edge on your THUAS laptop or install the tools on your own laptop. An example of a recent article on a current topic is: Why we should (not) worry about generative AI in medical ethics teaching by Seppe Segers (2024) where the full text is available via Find it @ H/Library.

By creating a personal account, you can, among other things, personalize the interface, save searches and set up e-mail alerts (notifications).

You can find lots of supporting information via the question mark at the bottom right. You can also (after registration) follow an e-learning to get to know this database at your own pace (approx. 90 min).

Management Executive Base and M&O

Management Executive Base is a simple Dutch-language database from Boom publishers and contains more than 6,000 articles in pdf form in various disciplines within the broad field of management. These articles are from:

M&O Tijdschrift voor Management en Organisatie (ongoing)
- Management Executive (until 2017)
- Management Tools (until 2009)
- Bedrijfskunde (until 2003)
- Management & Informatie (until 2003)
- Management Select (until 2003)
- Management & Communicatie (until 2004)
- Handboek Organisatie Instrumenten (until 2003)
- Checklisten Algemeen Management (until 2001)
- Management Lexicon (until 2001)

So the content largely consists of older content. Nevertheless, older articles, instruments and tools may also be of interest and help in vision and strategy definition and personal development.

  • The database is easy to search by, for example, keyword, author name or (part of) the title of the article. If you type in part of the search term, suggestions appear.
  • Advanced searching can be done by Author, Title or Year of publication.
  • You can filter by Source or Category (subject classification, not the same as keyword).

You can also search only in M&O via that magazine's own site. M&O is also included in Boomportaal, where you can easily read the articles online.

Some of the articles from Management Executive Base are also on the public website Boom Management. There, there are many articles, downloads, podcasts, videos and blogs on various aspects of management; and references to Boom Publishing's publications.

An example of a recent article:

Het resultaat van samenwerking in transities inzichtelijk maken : Praktijkvoorbeeld bij New Energy Coalition by Marieke Abbink-Pellenbarg and Patrick Kenis.

There is a growing demand for solutions to complex issues using an integrated approach. Organisational networks are considered increasingly important, but the forms of steering, controlling and monitoring from the world of the stand-alone organisation do not seem to apply. It is therefore important to find appropriate steering mechanisms and monitoring frameworks. The authors introduce Ebrahim's (2019) Social Change Performance Model and apply it to a current real-life case study. In doing so, they reflect on the applicability and added value of this model.

Acland’s Video Atlas of Human Anatomy: unique three-dimensional resource!

A combination of unique features makes the Acland's Video Atlas different from all other anatomy teaching resources and provides a truly three-dimensional view of anatomy. The Video Atlas images are direct video recordings of real human anatomical specimens. These prepared body parts are not stiffened or discolored by embalming. Their tissues retain the color, texture and mobility of the living body. Even the movements of the muscles, tendons and joints are the same as in a living body. The fact that the specimen rotates, allows you to see it as a fully three-dimensional object.

If you create a personal account, you can test how much you already know about anatomy by practicing with the exams.

Many anatomic structures are still known by names given when Greek, Arabic and Latin were languages of learning please refer to the Glossary.

Acland videos can also be searched for using the E-Publication Finder. The advantage of this search method is that you can see immediately if there is an e-book or e-journal about the body part you are looking for. For example, if you search for information about the clavicle, you will get a total of four results. Three Acland’s video’s : The clavicle and scapulaFirst rib and clavicleMovements of the clavicle and scapula and one e-book: Evaluation of Clavicle Injuries

SpringerLink : Multidisciplinary database of Springer

SpringerLink is the very comprehensive multidisciplinary database of renowned academic publisher Springer. Through this platform, more than 7 million scientific articles (from 1997 onwards) are available full text as well as reference works and protocols. More than 70,000 full e-books from publication year 2017 to the present; including handbooks and encyclopaedias. These are peer reviewed and can be viewed, downloaded and printed without limitation on the number of simultaneous users. Also included is Dutch content from Springer BSL (Bohn Stafleu van Loghum) publishers in the field of healthcare and social care.

After performing a search, it is possible to filter the results by content type (such as ebook, chapter, article, conference paper or proceeding); date range of publication; language; discipline and sub-disciplines. Furthermore, sorting is possible by relevance or by publication date.

The search options correspond to what is common in most scientific search interfaces. “Double quotes" allow exact searches; the asterisk * allows truncation; and the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT (capitals required!) can be used to refine or broaden searches. It is also possible to indicate the order of operations with round brackets ( ). See the search examples on the relevant Springer information page.

For ebooks, you can search through the content and download chapters.

On the page of an ejournal, you can browse the volumes and episodes on the right-hand side under Explore or search within the ejournal. You can also receive e-mail notifications with the table of contents (TOC) of newly published issues.

For articles, you can generate a link at the bottom via "Share this article" to share the article with everyone.

The current interface has the shortcoming that you cannot specifically search the content we have access to. That is still possible via the old interface. Moreover, that one offers more functionalities, such as the Advanced Search option via the cogwheel to the right of the search field.

An example of current content in SpringerLink:

Jeannet, AM., Dražanová, L. Blame it on my youth: the origins of attitudes towards immigration. Acta Politica (2023). https://doi-org.ezproxy.hhs.nl/10.1057/s41269-023-00314-6

Based on political socialisation theory and extensive large-scale analyses, the authors argue that people's attitudes towards immigration can be explained by the political zeitgeist during their youth. The equality principle and the tradition principle have opposite effects on attitudes towards immigration.

National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) Abstracts Database

The National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) Abstracts Database is published by the National Criminal Justice Service of the U.S. Department of Justice. The database contains summaries of and information on more than 200,000 U.S. and international publications, including federal, state, and local reports, books, research papers, scholarly articles, audio presentations, and (as yet) unpublished scholarly work on criminal, child, or juvenile justice, as well as drug control. However, you will not find court decisions and judgments, opinions or statutes in this database.

NCJRS is part of the 'Criminology Collection', which is in turn part of ProQuest's 'Social Science Premium Collection', with databases on sociology, politics, criminology, library and information science, education and linguistics. ProQuest databases can be combined or excluded via the 'Change databases' option.

Although the title of the database states that it is an 'abstract' database, full text articles can also be found in the database.

For example, if you are looking for an overview article about the substances used as doping in sports, then this is a relevant article: Doping in sport: an overview. You can read the full text article here.

The database also contains reports, such as this report on international drug control, of which only the summary and metadata can be seen.

Another current theme is bullying (cyberbullying) by young people via social media. There are also interesting articles and publications on this subject in this database, such as this systematic review article. It is also possible to read the full-text version of this article here.

Espacenet: a database of patent documents

Patents protect the property rights to a product or a piece of technology (the method of production or usage). They grant an exclusive right to make, sell, and commercially use a product. Before applying for a patent for your own invention, you must conduct a novelty search to ensure that your invention is truly innovative. As a student, you might also want to find inspiration for your own work or simply explore how certain technologies work. For all these purposes, you can use the Espacenet database.

Espacenet is a database of patent documents developed by the European Patent Office. It contains 80 million patent publications from 90 countries. In patent documents, you will find technical descriptions of inventions. Moreover, the database provides information on authors, applicants, and the application date. With the information you can determine what technical knowledge is already available. In Espacenet, you cannot see if the patent has ever been granted and, if so, whether it is still valid. You can find this information in the Dutch Patent Register or the European Patent Register.

In Espacenet, you can search in three different ways: Smart Search, Advanced Search, and Classification Search. With Smart Search, you can simply search with keywords. When searching for patent documents worldwide, you use English keywords. You can also select a country and search in the respective language. For example, with the keyword “artificial intelligence” you can find the patent documents of the inventions where AI has been applied. If you already have knowledge of a particular technical field and know inventors or applicants, you can use Advanced Search. With the name of the applicant, you can, for example, find all patent applications submitted by Ronald Plasterk, Dutch scientist, entrepreneur, and politician.

Each document contains classification numbers of technical solutions. This classification, the so called Cooperative Patent Classification, has been made by  European Patent Office in cooperation with the US Patent and Trademark Office. When you are familiar with this classification of technical inventions, you can use the third search method: Classification Search.

The patent documents can be translated into many other languages. You can save the search results in a .csv file.

From XpertHR to Brightmine: practical HRM information

Brightmine is the revamped brand behind the former XpertHR. The platform has been revamped to offer multiple products equally; with XpertHR corresponding to Brightmine HR & Compliance Centre. Apart from the name, the access URL has also changed, but the content of this database has remained the same: HR legislation, labour market and collective agreement data, analytics and human expertise. Brightmine is the global market leader with more than 10,000 customers in the US, UK and the Netherlands. Our licence provides access to mainly Dutch information.

Brightmine contains up-to-date, practical information on all aspects of the human resources profession. The information is organised logically: on strategy, joining, conditions of employment, being employed to leaving employment. Practical cases covering these topics are supplemented with up-to-date data. With topics such as personnel planning, vitality, conducting interviews, working across borders, step-by-step plans and checklists. Also Dutch and European employment conditions (collective agreements, Works Councils) combined with legal information.

The functionalities in Brightmine are gradually being extended with (generative) AI. This will soon make it possible to query the content in natural language via question-and-answer.

See Actueel for Nieuws and the Wetgevingskalender with the complete text of the bill, what the progress is, explanations of the content and the meaning for practice. The database also contains webinars you can attend or watch recordings of such as: “Optimaliseer jouw aannamebeleid met nieuwe arbeidsmarktontwikkelingen en AI”.

Sociological Abstracts : Gateway to the peer reviewed journal literature of sociology

In general
Sociological Abstracts is an international database in the field of the social and behavioural sciences. The database contains abstracts of articles from more than 1800 scholarly journals, books and reports from around 30 countries, including The Netherlands. Sociological Abstracts is part of the ProQuest Social Science Premium Collection.

Why use an abstract as a starting point?
The purpose of an abstract is to enable the reader to determine in a short time whether and why an article, chapter or book is worth reading. In an abstract, a reader can quickly find the main content and sometimes the methods of a research paper.

More specific
Subject coverage: Sociology, Social work, Mental health services, Gerontology, Race and ethnicity, Social policy, Social services and Social welfare. Records published by Sociological Abstracts in print during the database's first 11 years, 1952-1962, have been added to the database as of November 2005, extending the depth of the backfile of this authoritative resource. Some records published since 2001 contain references cited, sometimes with links to additional materials. Abstracts of articles from the Dutch Journal of Sociology are included from January 2011 to February 2020.

Are you looking for literature for your study or research?
Reading abstracts can inspire you to continue your search. A search result is only saved during your search session. For anything you want to keep longer and permanently, you can create a free account by choosing Create My Research Account at the top right. You can combine the search results again with Boolean operators. Limit your search results by selecting the options Peer-reviewed, Publication date and Document type.
Want to read the full journal article? Then check Google Scholar to see if it is available in full text. You can also request an article through ILL.

Example of a search
Want to read more about migrants and populism during the Dutch cabinet formation? Then combine the search terms 'migrants' AND 'populism' and choose 'Dutch' as the language. This search yields five articles worth reading, three of which are available in full text from the magazine Mens en Maatschappij.

The register has two functions.

First, it is a tool for researchers to choose the most suitable repository for their own research data. Second, the register plays the role of a database through which researchers can indirectly find relevant datasets for reuse in their own research projects.

You can easily search in the register by using keywords. Then you can refine your search with many different filters. When you search for a relevant dataset, the filters such as topics, countries, keywords or types of access will be relevant. If you are looking for a suitable repository for your own dataset, then – in addition to these filters – others also become important, such as certificates, metadata standards and restrictions for depositing data. Moreover, you can browse the collection with three different functions: subject, content type and countries. The browsing function is interactive and visually appealing.

The repositories included in the register must meet a number of criteria, including permanent storage and access to the data. Assessing the repository is easy because of six icons that are assigned to every single data repository.

These icons indicate the presence of the following criteria:

  1. information about additional services provided by the repository
  2. free access to the data (Open Access)
  3. licenses and terms of use
  4. persistent identifier
  5. certificate
  6. repository’s policy.

The register contains for example 28 data repositories on artificial intelligence from 17 different countries and almost 500 data repositories from social sciences, of which 388 are publicly accessible. You may also want to learn about the repositories run by 77 Dutch institutions.

Databases guide for the faculty Business, Finance & Marketing

The A-Z databases / digital sources list of the library consist of circa 125 databases and sources. How do you know which of these databases and sources are the most relevant to your study programme? Use the databases guide for the faculty BFM: Database guide BFM.

A lot of information useful for your study programme is included in databases of publishers or in digital sources of reputable organisations. The library offers access to a large number of selected databases and digital sources. The quality and relevance of the information in these databases and sources, in contrast to the information you find via Google, has been checked in advance and therefore reliable. Because the library focuses on all THUAS study programmes when selecting, this results in a long list.

The databases guide for the faculty Business, Finance & Marketing contains those databases and sources relevant to the study programmes belonging to this faculty and so focusing on the main pillars of business, economics and marketing.

The guide consists of three clear lists:

  1. Essential databases and sources such as Business Source Ultimate and Euromonitor Passport
  2. Other important databases and sources such as O'Reilly and Taylor & Francis Online
  3. General/multidisciplinary databases and sources also relevant such as Academic Search Ultimate and OpenAIRE

Are you looking for information to include in your student assignments? Then start with the essential databases and sources and, depending on whether you need more information, continue with the databases and sources from lists 2 and 3.

The database guide contains also information on databases and sources focused on special types of information and information about tools you can use to easily find the full text of a publication.

A short, easy-to-remember link has been created for the databases guide: bit.ly/databasesguide-bfm

The databases guide provides insight into which databases and sources are relevant. You can access the databases and sources via the A-Z list: http://thuas.com/databases. This A-Z list contains an short  description for each database or source. Read this description to optimise your choice of which database or source to want to use. Preprint Citation Index added to Web of Science

The Web of Science portal allows you to search journals, books, proceedings, datasets and now also preprints. Web of Science is interesting for researchers, teachers and students alike, but the Preprint Citation Index, which is explained in detail below, is particularly relevant for researchers.

In academic publishing, a preprint is the version of a research paper or outcome prior to the peer review process. Preprints are publicly available via online repositories (scientific archives). Web of Science recently provides access to current and searchable preprints from selected repositories, linked to author profiles; with links to the full-text.

The Preprint Citation Index is a separate database in the Web of Science platform and contains nearly two million preprints from the arXiv, bioRxiv, chemRxiv, medRxiv and Preprints.org repositories from 1991 to the present. The content is updated daily. During 2023, documents from more than a dozen additional repositories will be added. Preprint records are findable alongside other scientific output in Web of Science and are linked to the final versions when applicable. They are clearly marked in search results and are not included in citation figures such as Times Cited Counts or the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) in Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports.

Through the Preprint Citation Index, you can quickly find the latest developments in a field. You can:

  • From the preprint record, find all preprint versions and also the final published version of peer-reviewed articles in the records of the Web of Science Core Collection.
  • Discover links between preprints indexed in the Preprint Citation Index and journal articles indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection via citation links.
  • Gain greater insight into a researcher's expertise by displaying preprints on an author's Web of Science Researcher Profile.
  • Track new research in various repositories. You can set an alert based on keywords or on a particular researcher's name to be notified when relevant preprints become available.
  • Searching "All databases" in Web of Science will find both published content and preprints. The Refine option under the search field must be turned off.

See also the quick reference guide and introduction video on the Preprint Citation Index.

An example is this preprint of: "Practices, Drivers and Barriers of an Emerging Regenerative Higher Education in Europe - A Podcast-Based Inquiry" by Bas van den Berg, Kim Poldner, Ellen Sjoer and Arjen Wals.

  • Data Citation Index – index for search and discovery of scientific research data

Data Citation Index (DCI) is multidisciplinary index of scientific research data launched in 2012  within Web of Science. This database is mainly intended for researchers who want to use existing data for their own research.

It allows for search and discovery of the data and links them to the published literature with appropriate citation. It focuses on repositories that publish metadata in English or, at the very least, allow provision of sufficient descriptive (metadata) information in English.

Content

DCI includes the following content:

  • Data repository: a database or collection comprising data studies, and data sets which stores and provides access to the raw data.
  • Data study: description of studies or experiments held in repositories with the associated data or software which have been used in the data study.
  • Data set: a single or coherent set of data, data file, or software object provided by the repository, as part of a collection, data study or experiment.

Coverage

DCI is includes research data from three major subject areas: Science & Technology, Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities. Individual repositories may be multidisciplinary, inter-disciplinary or may have a narrow focus in order to qualify for inclusion. Selection criteria are applied consistently across all repositories, irrespective of geographic coverage (international, national, regional or institutional), or whether the repository is multidisciplinary or has a narrow subject focus.

Data citation

DCI  data citation provides a standardized citation format for each record.  The DataCite citation standard has been adopted due to its general acceptance and its ability to be applied to a wide range of data types and disciplines.

Example: Surveys on stress among students

If you are interested in specific research method used for collecting data for your research subject, you combine the key words relevant for the subject with the name of research method that you are interested in. For example, see the results from the search  “stress AND students AND survey.”

Week 2 | 2023

Week 2

  • Search effectively with Google Scholar

    Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a general search engine for searching scientific literature in all subject areas. It is therefore useful for all students and staff to get to know it a little better.

What can you find with Google Scholar?

You search within a wide range of sources from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other websites. They can include articles from peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed journals; pre-prints, abstracts, technical reports, dissertations; scientific books; patents; and court decisions.

Search tips, both for Google and Google Scholar

    - By default, you search for results that should contain all typed words.

    - It is possible to search more broadly by combining search terms with OR. Then at least one of those terms must appear in the search result: (youth OR teens OR adolescents).

    - You automatically search for the full word you have entered as well as all words with more letters at the end of that word. It is not possible to search on part of a word.

    - Sometimes synonyms are also automatically included in the search.

    - If you don't want that, you can put "double quotes" around your search terms. You will then search for exactly the words you type and in the order you type them.

    - An example of a combination of this: (Netherlands OR Dutch) "climate justice" Urgenda

    - You can exclude search terms by putting a -minus sign in front of them: salsa -dancing -course.

    - The search results are sorted by relevance. To see recent ones, Google Scholar also lets you sort by date or refine by period after your search.

    - In the Google Scholar menu, click on Advanced Search in the top left corner to search more specifically in the author, title and publication fields, and limit search results by date.

    - See also the in-depth information from UvA and UU.

    Access to full text

Finding interesting articles does not yet mean that you have immediate access to the full text. We therefore recommend installing the browser tools Lean Library, LibKey Nomad and EndNote Click. This will also automatically set up our Find it @ H/Library link resolver in Google Scholar. This allows you to access full-text content from Google Scholar based on our licences as well as find a lot of Open Access content. THUAS employeess already have this installed in Edge.

You can also set the linkresolver manually.

You can then also see in Google Scholar "subscribe to TOC" to receive email alerts when new articles appear in the ejournals you select. And you can see an indication for articles whether they are supported or contradicted by others through integration with scite.ai.

    Citations

To easily collect literature references, you can set up your favourite reference manager like RefWorks. To do so, go to Settings via the top left menu, choose RefWorks under Bibliography manager and then Save.

    Account

If you have a Google account and log in, you can save the search results found with Google Scholar in your personal library. You can also set up alerts so that you are notified by email when there are new results for saved searches.

  • Find Open Access journals to publish in DOAJ

If you are a researcher looking for journals in which to publish Open Access, you can get good help from Directory of Open Access Journals. Besides search options, there are also options to filter by licence type, costs of Open Access publishing and which review type is applied.

DOAJ is a database consisting of only OA journals, with no access restrictions and all with a CC licence. To be included in this database, a journal must, among other things, publish at least 5 academic articles per year and focus mainly on researchers or people from a particular field. More information on journal requirements and verification you will find here. DOAJ has international coverage and covers almost all subject fields.

Search tips

First, choose whether to search for articles or for journals. The search fields for articles and journals differ slightly. If you use more than one search term, they are automatically combined with AND. You can also specify with OR or NOT (make sure you use capital letters) and truncate words with the *-sign. Building complex search strings with, for instance, brackets is not possible.

For instance, have look at open access general law journals, with articles in English or Dutch, published in The Netherlands.

  • BouwkostenKompas: Handy tool to calculate construction costs, among other things

What can this tool be used for?

BouwkostenKompas is a construction cost management tool that provides access to the most up-to-date and reliable cost data. The tool is of course very useful for students of the courses Bouwkunde and Civiele Techniek, but courses such as Ruimtelijke Ordening and Werktuigbouwkunde can also benefit from it.

The tool consists of a cost database (Cost figures) and a calculation tool (Calculate). This allows you to make an accurate estimate of the costs for construction and renovation projects. With the Cost figures you can quickly determine costs for individual materials. With the calculation tool you make an estimate for the entire construction project. The costs of building materials change quickly, as do labor costs in the construction industry. It is of great importance for every architect to be able to estimate the costs as accurately as possible when starting a new construction project. The correct assessment guarantees the success of projects and investments.

Cost figures

The Cost figures are divided into four different categories:

First you choose the right subcategory, such as new construction, office, educational buildings, agricultural buildings or bridges. Then you determine the place where the work will take place. Lower or higher costs may apply in different regions of The Netherlands. You get an overview of the costs, sorted by destination of the buildings. In the case of education, these are, for example, a daycare center, university of applied sciences or laboratory building.

Calculate

The construction costs based on Calculation can be calculated in a few simple steps. First, you determine the location of the construction project and fill in the general project information. In the second step you choose the right building type. You then define the architectural parameters as well as installations and other costs. With the push of a button you get an estimate of a project.

Week 45

  • The Taylor & Francis 'Business, Management & Economics' collection for articles about consumer behaviour, advertising, marketing, retail, e-commerce, sales en public relations

The Taylor & Francis 'Business, Management & Economics' collection contains more then 120 e-journals focused on topics such as accounting, business history, economics, finance, human resources, marketing and public management. Featured journals are Journal of AdvertisingEconomic Systems Research and Review of Social Economy.

When you browse to the main topic 'Economics, Finance, Business & Industry' via 'Explore journals and articles by subject' on the homepage, you will get more than 400,000 results. For not all of these results the full text is available. Therefore, tick the option 'Only show what I have access to' in the left column under 'Access Type'. You can then click the sub-topic of your choice in the left column under Subject. Marketing and related sub-topics such as consumer behaviour, advertising, retail, e-commerce, sales and public relations can be found by clicking on 'Economics, Finance, Business & Industry' and then on 'Business, Management and Accounting'. This concerns almost 23,500 results of which the full text is available.

Of course you can also search with your own keywords via the simple search box on the homepage. The 'Advanced search' button next to the search bar gives you two extra options: search in a specific field, for example in the title or in the abstract, and indicate the publication year of the results. When you search for the term 'advertising' in the title combined with the term 'ethics' as a keyword, you will get 28 results of which the full text is available, including the overview article 'Children’s vulnerability to advertising: an overview of four decades of research (1980s–2020s)' by two researchers from Erasmus University Rotterdam. When you create a free account, you can save this search and check back later to see if there are new results. You can also receive an alert by e-mail with these new results. It is also possible to receive an alert by e-mail with the latest articles on a specific topic, for example one of the marketing topics mentioned above.

Week 44 | 2022
  • Browser tools for accessing full text content

The library offers three browser toolsLean LibraryLibKey Nomad and EndNote Click. If you use a web browser with these extensions (also called add-ons or plugins), they will automatically notify you with a link to the full text during your search for information on the internet.

For example, if you use Google and come to a website with articles from ejournals or e-books, you usually do not have access to the full content. But the library might have paid for access to that content. These browser tools then automatically alert you with a link to the full text of the article or e-book in the digital library. This combines the advantages of Google search with the advantages of the digital library where you can access the full text of reliable and good-quality literature.

All three tools provide access not only to our paid, licensed content but also to Open Access content. Furthermore, there is integration with the search interfaces of Google Scholar, Web of Science and PubMed, significantly improving the operation of those search systems. Of course, the tools are safe to use, no personal data or passwords are transmitted.

Each tool has its own strengths, with Lean Library offering the most functionality. Because they complement each other, it is best to use all three. On the website you can read more about the differences between the tools and how you can easily install them in the browsers on your private computer. On THUAS computers and work laptops, these tools are already installed by default in Microsoft Edge.

  • More full text access to sociological resources through the Sociology Database

Sociology Database covers the international literature of sociology and social work, including relevant titles from related fields such as social policy, social care, social anthropology, gender studies, gerontology, social psychology and population studies. The database contains hundreds of full-text academic journals, as well as dissertations and other sources from around 30 countries (including the Netherlands) from 1985 onwards. This new ProQuest collection incorporates much of the familiar Social Services Abstracts database, albeit with fewer journals but expanding full-text access.

Below you can find three recent Dutch articles on status holders and the integration paradox in the Netherlands:

Do you find a topic interesting and are you looking for more (English-language) sources on the same subject? Then look under "suggested sources" in the right-hand column after opening the article.

Articles published in the sociological journal Mens en Maatschappij are available in full text in this database as from March 2013 (Vol. 88, no. 1). Articles published in the Dutch Journal of Social and Economic History are available full text as of 2014 (Vol. 11, no. 3).

Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts: Database of abstracts and full text articles in all fields of linguistics

In the ProQuest database Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA) you will find not only abstracts and indexes of international literature on linguistics and related disciplines in linguistics, but also many full text articles. The database contains articles and abstracts of books on all aspects of linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. You will find a wealth of information on many different areas of linguistics, including descriptive, historical, comparative, theoretical and geographical linguistics.

The database provides journal article summaries and citations for book reviews from more than 1,500 journal publications, as well as book summaries, book chapters, and dissertations. The coverage of the database is from 1974 to the present. This database is indexed with a thesaurus of 3,700 terms. The thesaurus is available online.

For example, if you are looking for abstracts about language education for higher-educated refugees, you will find interesting results in LLBA, such as this abstract. Also nice is this somewhat older abstract of a Dutch article about language education in the Netherlands.

LLBA is part of the Linguistics Collection, which in turn is part of ProQuest's Library and Information Science Collection, which contains databases on sociology, politics, criminology, library and information science, education and linguistics. ProQuest databases can be combined or excluded via the 'Change databases' option. It is also possible to create an account for all ProQuest databases, to save documents and searches, and to set alerts.

Renewed Web of Science: find important scientific information

Citations establish links between related scientific literature. Through Clarivate’s citation index Web of Science influential literature can be easily traced. Web of Science contains bibliographic metadata from a large number of scientific research publications in all fields of science. Our licence allows access to citations from 1980 onwards.

There are extensive possibilities to search and discover trends and patterns. For example, if you search for a topic and look at the "hot papers", you will see both the quoted literature and references to articles published later. Web of Science does not contain full-text content but thanks to our tools, you can still access a lot of full-text. You can use Edge on your THUAS laptop or install the tools on your private laptop. Then, in addition to download options, you will see magazine covers and the option to view the full issues of magazines. If this is not immediately visible, it helps to reload the web page.

In Web of Science's revamped interface, the question mark at the bottom right takes you to the Resource Centre with product updates, guided tours, training, help guide, news and contact options.

E-learning is also available to learn about this database at your own pace (approx. 90 min).

By creating a personal account, you can personalize the interface, save searches and set up e-mail notifications, among other things.

An example of a relevant early-access article: The Implications of Russia's Invasion of Ukraine for the EU Energy Market and Businesses by J. Korosteleva, 7 September 2022 in the British Journal of Management (full-text).

Springer Link – What can you find for chemistry in this multidisciplinary database?

Springer Link is a multidisciplinary database, known from the academic publisher that publishes for all fields of science: humanities, natural sciences and social sciences, all spread over 48 disciplines. SpringerLink distinguishes twelve different types of publications and presents their content in five different languages, including of course – and above all – English.

Chemistry, including all disciplines and subdisciplines

The content relevant to chemistry consists of 950 thousand publications, of which more than a thousand e-books and 450 thousand articles. When you choose the discipline “Chemistry”, the list of sub-disciplines is automatically adjusted. At the top of the list are the most relevant disciplines.

Simple and advanced search

It is possible to search both simple and advanced, although in both cases the search functions are fairly limited, when you compare it with, for example, the EBSCO databases. You can search with Boolean operators (AND, OR and NOT), but you cannot indicate with descriptors which field you are looking for (e.g. author, title, keywords and abstract or the entire text). Unfortunately, this means that you can search less accurately. To solve that, use the filters to find the right search results. You can refine the searches by, for example, type of publication, discipline and sub-discipline, and the language.

Specific and broad terminology

With this search strategy it is important that you choose good keywords. When searching for eBooks, you should choose a more general term: the name of a discipline or sub-discipline, such as “Organic Chemistry” or “Inorganic Chemistry.” You will also find the relevant e-books with more general concepts such as “stoichiometry” or “reactants”. When you search with specific terms you will not find any or not really relevant e-books. Specific terms such as “reaction yield”, “chemical conversion”, “limiting reactant” or “excess reactant” are suitable to search for articles and other short publications. When you search for articles, you will also need to combine more specific terms to avoid getting too many search results that don't quite match your search query.

StatLine, The Netherlands in figures

StatLine is the Statistics Netherlands’ database. Statistics Netherlands offers a wealth of data on the Dutch economy and society. From inflation to population, data are clearly presented in tables, classified by theme and freely available.

Besides browsing by theme, you can search in StatLine using your own keywords. A list will be shown with all entries containing your keyword. After that you can refine the list by theme, regional classification or reporting year.

In StatLine, you can generate graphs and maps with the push of a button. Adjusting and switching graphs is also possible. It is easily done using smart icons. This makes it easier for you to visualise or share the data (linking, printing or downloading).

Here are some examples of tables and graphs:

You can also compile your own tables and graphs in StatLine. You can read more about how StatLine works and what you can and cannot do with it in the user manual. The Frequentlly Asked Questionspage contains information that explain every part of StatLine, such as how to adjust a table.

Some useful tips:

  • Use the “back button” to go back one step when you find a table while browsing per theme and the table does not turn out to be the table you were looking for
  • When searching via the search box you can use common search functions such as AND/OR/NOT, double quotes and the wildcard *
  • When selecting variables in a table, you can use the shift key to select a range. And it is possible to move the selection screen so that you can keep the table in view while selecting variables
  • Adjusting the layout of a table can make it easier to interpret the figures. You can change the layout of a table by dragging variables
  • When you click on the information icon at the top right of a table, you get a general description of the table and explanations of the subjects and classifications used in the table. The table desciption also contains links to related tables and the characterization of the study
  • If you have compiled a table and you want to save it for later, you can use the link icon. This link will take you to the specific table you have created. This in contrast to the link from the address bar, if you use this link it will take you to the standard view of the table

When it takes you too long to select data in StatLine, you can use ready-made StatLine tables. They can be accessed through the themes and dossiers on the main website of Statistics Netherlands. Choose the theme or dossier you are interested in. Every (news) article and overview page contains links to ready-made tables. If this does not help, you can contact the infoservice of Statistics Netherlands.

Are you in search of Europe in figures? Use Eurostat.

SDGO database supports sustainable development

The Sustainable Development Goals Online database of publisher Taylor & Francis is an interdisciplinary digital and multimedia collection around the 17 SDGs, the United Nations' sustainable development programme to end poverty, combat inequality and injustice and protect the planet. The content consists of over 19,000 carefully selected chapters from e-books; over 1,900 journal articles and over 300 presentations, videos, case studies, lesson guides and lesson plans. The collection was created in cooperation with the United Nations and is led by an international advisory board of academics, practitioners, policy makers and officials in the tertiary sector, government and NGOs. See also this introduction, the flyer and the content list.

In the content list you can see that with the April update, a large number of chapters from ebooks and articles from ejournals have been included again. From the ebook: The Routledge Companion to Media and Poverty aimed at SDG 1 (ending poverty), 14 chapters are now available. Such as: Extreme Poverty as Human Rights Violation : Moral Duties and Public Engagement in the Global North by Vincent Fang (2021). This is about the opportunities and pitfalls that the human rights discourse on extreme poverty offers to shift the way Northern audiences understand and relate to extreme poverty from the charity paradigm to the justice paradigm.

VideoArts: database with short English-language videos in the field of management and communication

The VideoArts database contains now more than 230 short (humorous) video clips in the field of for example management, leadership, health and safety, sales, communication and customer service. The English-language clips contain skits averaging 3 minutes between often a 'good' and a 'bad' manager. There are also slightly longer video clips of about 10 minutes on some subjects, for example about Cyber Security.

The clips can be a good addition to the theoretical material on the above subjects, and show recognizable situations on the work floor that we all have dealt with or might have to deal with in the future.

The clips from VideoArts can be used copyright free within Blackboard and PowerPoint environment, and other applications within the Haagse Hogeschool. It is best to search VideoArts via Google Edge. If you click on a video with the right mouse button, one of the options is in which ways you can share the video. This could be useful for Blended Learning.

A recognizable example is: Bad news meeting

Week 17 | 2022

SpringerProtocols - database with protocols for biomedical and life sciences

SpringerProtocols is a English source with approximately 66,000 protocols and methods intended for laboratory research. The database contains information about tools, methods and laboratory handlings. This information allows you to repeat specific experiments. SpringerProtocols is mainly relevant for biomedical and life sciences, but also biotechnology and food science. The sources concern the laboratory research of the past forty years. Old protocols are never removed from the collection, but the collection is constantly updated with alternative protocols that demonstrate comparable solutions for specific experiments. Some protocols are provided in videos such as a the one about Genetic Manipulation of the Embryonic Chicken Inner Ear. In total, the database contains more than 1000 videos of experiments.

In SpringerProtocols you can easily search with keywords. Advanced search is not available. On the other hand, you can use multiple filters to refine your search. For example, you can filter by year of publication, laboratory technique, antibody, organism, cell lines, sources and publication type (e.g. protocol, overview, etc.).

Each item contains metadata (title, author and abstract and keywords) of a publication based on one or more experiments. The keywords are divided into three categories: “technique”, “model” and “other” (thematic keywords). Most items contain images and some of them also contain videos of the experiments. In some publications you will also find a dataset derived from the experiment. Next to that, you will find an overview of cited sources and a list of relevant articles. In addition, you will be redirected to the full publication which is directly accessible if the Library has the license. Each source is provided in metrics (number of downloads and citations). The metrics help determine how many times a specific experiment has been repeated and how relevant it is to a particular type of research.

For example, the chapter “pH and Color” discusses pH measurements and color as two important characteristics of meat, which determine its quality. The authors provide an overview of techniques used to determine pH and color, both physically and chemically, in meat and meat products. The link will take you to the full-text publication available via SpringerLink.

What does the digital and physical collection of the HHs library in Delft offer?

As well as the library at the main campus, The Hague University of Applied Sciences has libraries at the side locations. The library at Sports Campus Zuiderpark is a manned library, just like the one at the main campus. The libraries in Delft and Zoetermeer are unmanned locations but are managed from the main campus. See the Who-does-what? of the library for who you can ask about the location libraries.

Digital library collection

The HHs library offers in addition to the physical collection of books and journals, an ever-growing digital collection. Consisting not only of e-books and e-journals, but also audiovisual materials and audio books. Almost all sources are also accessible from home after logging in. Click here for a A-Z list of all the databases.

Every week a database or tool is highlighted on the library website. In the archive you will find previous posts. For example, the Browzine tool, which shows you which academic e-journals we have access to in your field. Or about the O'Reilly database, in which you will not only find e-books on many subjects but also audio books.

E-Publication Finder

If you want to know whether the library offers full text access to a specific e-book or e-journal, go to the E-Publication Finder. Search by publication title, subject, publisher or ISSN/ISBN. Click here for more information.

What can I find in the library in Delft?

The collection in Delft is in line with the technical and ICT courses that are accommodated there. It is a small collection including the compulsory literature and books and magazines to support education, research or self-study. The library has a catalogue pc to help you search for a book. Books can be borrowed by using the self-service facility.

Study places

In the library there are 6 study places where you can work or study quietly, during the opening hours of the library. If you want to study in the evening or at the weekend, you could go to the main campus, which is open from 9.00am to 10.30pm on weekdays and from 10.00am to 10.30pm on the weekends.

Keep up to date with the latest IT developments and research

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is the largest professional association in computing education and science in the world. The ACM Digital Library contains an extensive full-text collection on information technology, as well as conference proceedings, newsletters, video and audio files.

Deepen your general IT knowledge with the ACM magazines. The Magazine Crossroads is written by and for students. A new magazine appears every season.  Read the latest interview with Dr. Elissa M. Redmiles about her research experience with COVID-19 tracking apps for respecting end-user privacy

The difference between journals and magazines/magazines is that journals are scientific in nature and aimed at researchers or specialists in the field. A magazine is intended for a somewhat broader audience and contains opinion and news.

How to search for an ACM journal or magazine? On the ACM homepage you will find journals, magazines and other materials such as proceedings, books, SIGs (special interest groups) and people. Click on magazines and you will immediately see a search box to search for a subject and you will also immediately see the magazine covers. By scrolling down the page a short introduction about the magazines will be shown. Just click on the magazine cover for more information such as bibliometrics, subject areas (covered in the magazine), most frequent affiliations with universities and most cited authors.

By creating a personal account (at the top of the ACM page with the button register) you can receive notifications as soon as a new publication appears. Or you receive newly published articles based on your search query. For more information see how to set up search alerts and rss.

Week 8 | 2022

Find company and market information in the database Business Source Ultimate

Business Source Ultimate is a large international database containing business publications including full text articles from highly authoritative periodicals such as Harvard Business Review and Journal of Marketing. But did you know that this database also contains company and market information? This information consists on the one hand of company profiles with financial and management data and on the other hand of SWOT analyses, product reviews and reports: company reports, industry reports, country reports and market research reports. You can search for this information in various ways.

First, the Company Information tab (in the blue bar on top). Before you start searching, you can select one of the following options in the drop-down menu to the left of the Find field: seach by company name, search by the name of the parent company, search by the stock abbreviation or seach by keyword. The results list contains the location city, state and country and the turnover per company. Mark the checkbox for companies for which you would like to export a .csv file of company information and click the CSV icon in the Tools column on the right. Click a hyperlinked Company Name to view the Company Landing page with more financial and management data. On that page, use the left column to find related companies (using the North American Industry Classification System NAICS).

You also have the Company Profiles tab (in the blue bar on top under More). Here you will find an alphabetical list of all companies present in the database, where you can search by the name of the company. Select Match any words for a broader search. When you have found the right company, you can immediately view the company report (PDF in the second column). Click on the title for the abstract of the report. When you slide out the left column on this page you will find company-related information including SWOT analyses, country reports, industry reports, market research reports and product reviews.

These source types (the SWOT analyses, the various reports and the product reviews) can be found as a filter option in the left column for every search you perform in the database. After all, that's the third way you can search for company and market information in Business Source Ultimate. The database has worldwide coverage.

You can use the Indexes tab to search for information and reports within a specific geographic area. This tab can be found in the blue bar at the top under 'More''. Select the index 'Geopgraphic Terms' and enter the geographical indication you want to search for, for example Netherlands. When you click Search you will get a list of terms. Select the correct term and click Add. In the search results list after clicking on Search, you can use the filter option source types again. By the way, you will not find the company reports this way because this source type is not included in the filter option.

Week 50 | 2021

REAXYS – a database of chemical reactions

REAXYS is a database of chemical reactions, compounds and substance properties linked  to scientific publications and patents, in which they are discussed or mentioned. The database offers extensive knowledge on organic and inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology. The chemical data provided by Elsevier - the database publisher - dates back to 1771.

Keywords and chemical reactions

In REAXYS you search exclusively with English terms. You can search with keywords, with chemical reactions, or a combination of both. So you may want to start with using the "Quick search" function meant for simple searches. Then, the "Query builder" function will allow you to set up more complex search strategies that consist of more than two elements (texts and chemical structures). To build your comprehensive search strategy, you can use the “Fields” and “Forms” tabs. The first tab helps you to specify the search fields. Under the second tab you will find standard search forms for frequently used searches.

Chemical structures

Marvin JS is an editor tool that allows you to build your own chemical structures with both, systematic and trivial names of chemical substances. Elsevier offers a comprehensive instruction on how to use this tool.

The results

You can manage the found results in different ways. First, with the function “Sort by REAXYS ranking” you can sort them in different ways. Second, it is possible to export data in Pdf, Word and Excel files. In addition, you can create a synthesis plan with the “Synthesis Planner” function and you can also export this synthesis plan. If you want to stay informed about new literature in which a specific reaction or structure occurs, you can install an alert.

Relevance

Among others, REAXYS can be useful for the faculty of Food technology. For example, if you would like to learn more about Maillard reaction, you can easily find relevant information.

Maillard reaction is a chemical reaction named after Luis Camille Maillard (1878-1936), a French physician and chemist. Under the influence of heat, chemical reactions occur between sugars and amino acids (e.g. proteins). This reaction causes that food not only changes color, but also taste or even nutritional values. The Maillard reaction occurs in the preparation of beer, bread, chocolate, coffee and meat. Cookbooks recommend that meat should be briefly roasted on a preheated frying pan before it becomes an ingredient of a meal cooked in water. The heat from the frying pan helps to release odors and this happens precisely because the Maillard reaction takes place.

When you search with the keyword “Maillard reaction” you will find 179 chemical reactions. 66 documents (scientific articles and patents) recalling the Maillard reactions are linked to these records. You are also directed to full-text publications and if the Library offers access to a specific publication, you can immediately read it. For example, when searching for Maillard reaction you will find a link

to an article on the reduction of allergens in Japanese cedar pollen in which the reaction is mentioned.

The library catalogue searches the following collections: books, journals, CDs and DVDs and part of the e-book and e-journal collection. Here you can find whether a title is available and on which location and shelf it is located.

Search options

A simple and extensive search is possible, combine multiple search terms and different indexes. The search result can be further refined by type of material (e.g. compulsory literature), language, year, author or subject.

Acquisitions

The library catalogue offers a weekly overview of the latest acquisitions. Every week new titles, both physical and digital, are added to the collections at the various locations. In the archive you will find the acquisitions of previous weeks.

Reading lists

The library catalogue also offers almost all reading lists. In the Excel files the 2020-2021 reading lists per study program (in which all academic years) are made available. Within the Excel file you will find additional library information:

  • select study year to view required titles
  • find links to availability of printed books within the library collection
  • find links to available e-books within the library collection

You can find a complete list of required literature here

Online renewal and loan details

Go to the tab user activities to renew your borrowed materials after logging in. You can also renew at the library's self-service desk or by calling (070) 445 7882 or sending an e-mail

The catalogue is also searchable via the H/Library app. It is also possible to extend borrowed materials. Receive a reminder on your phone when your loan period is about to expire, and extend it directly via the app. This prevents unnecessary fines. Available for Android and IOS..

Digital collection

Besides the collection of physical library materials, the library also offers a large digital collection in more than 100 databases via the library website. You can find an overview of the most relevant databases for your study on this page.

E-publication Finder

In the E-publication Finder you will find an overview of and access to e-books and journals that are available through the HHs library. If you are looking for a specific book or journal and it is not listed in the library catalogue, check whether there is online access.

The market research database Euromonitor Passport

Are you looking for information about an international company? Profile, strategy, positioning or SWOT? Or are you looking for industry profiles worldwide, Europe or a specific country (including the Netherlands)? Market size, share of sales, growth forecasts? Or are you looking for consumer spending data and trends? Then go to the database Euromonitor Passport in the digital library.

Perhaps you are used to search for this kind of information in the database Marketline Advantage? Practical experience (tested within education at THUAS) has shown that Euromonitor Passport offers more detailed (coverage and granularity) and more targeted information (for B2C and B2B market research) for marketing plans. We therefore decided to replace MarketLine Advantage with Euromonitor Passport. Until December 31, 2021, both databases are still accessible via the A-Z databases list. From January 1, 2022, MarketLine Advantage will disappear from the list and you can only use Euromonitor Passport to conduct international market research.

Euromonitor Passport contains statistics, forecasts and analysis on industries, economies, companies, and consumers. The forward-looking analysis of consumer and industrial markets have been elaborated in extensive but well-organized reports. You can request the related statistics in tabular form with filter and choice options in variables. For example, the report 'Electric Mobility: Opportunities and Challenges in the Clean Fuel Industry' (search for the title of the report in Euromonitor to view the report) with associated statistics (click on the page of the report in the left menu on Related Statistics) has been recently launched. This is an illustrative example, as Euromonitor Passport contains more than 24,000 reports and category-level market information for 30 major industries including subindustries. There is even full vertical access for 9 subindustries. Look at the details database contents to see which (sub)industries are involved.

Euromonitor Passport is a database that can be used for making marketing plans with the following components:

  • Total market value and shares of company and competitors, and their development (delta)
  • Sales growth opportunities
  • STEP, DESTEP and PESTLE analysis
  • SWOT and TOWS analysis
  • Industry overview
  • Poster's Five Forces

You can search by topic/industry using the Euromonitor Passport search window. Or you can browse by industry. For each (sub)industry interactive dashboards, analysis reports and statistics are presented. On the page of an industry you will find the most important trends within four strategic themes. And on the page of a subindustry you will find a list of the most recent reports. Use the Economies, Consumers and Channel tabs for socio-demographic, socio-economic, trade and retail data. Use the Company tile on the home page to search by company name for the country profiles of the industries in which the company operates. Launch the Company Dashboard for an interactive map, scatter plot or bar chart with sales, share, ranking and a regional comparison. Use the Search all categories tile to search step by step, search by multiple industries or companies at once, and search by brands. Register for free to share and save content. Account is not required to download content.

Google Scholar and full text tools

Google Scholar is a search engine for scientific articles. It searches the full text of most online peer reviewed journals from the major scientific publishers in Europe and North America. Also included are scholarly books and non-peer-reviewed journals. Use Advanced search (menu top left) to search in the author, title, and publication fields, as well as limit your search results by date. See also this LibGuideand the help text for Google Scholar.

But detecting relevant information does not mean you can access the content. That's why we recommend installing the browser tools Lean Library, LibKey Nomad and EndNote Click. Our link resolver Find it @ H/Library links to full text content in paid databases licensed by the library. This is automatically set by Lean Library and LibKey in Google Scholar. The tools also provide access to much Open Access content. Also, in Google Scholar you will see "subscribe to TOC" to receive email alerts when new articles appear in the ejournals you select. And you can see an indication of whether articles are supported or contradicted by others through integration with scite.ai. Don't want this? You can change your preferences via Advanced Settings in Lean Library.

The following article can be found via Google Scholar and the full text tools. In it, the authors indicate that Google Scholar clearly offers the largest coverage compared to other large citation databases. But compared to Web of Science, for example, the search and filter possibilities are limited and the metadata is of lesser quality.

GreenFILE: multidisciplinary database for climate change research

The GreenFILE database provides access to scientific sources, government reports and popular publications about how individuals, companies and governments affect the environment and what needs to be done to neutralize negative effects. GreenFILE contains indexes and abstracts of more than 1.1 million items, small part of which (15,000 publications) is available in full text. The time range of the publications is from 1913 to the present. Most publications are about global climate change and what needs to be done to limit its fatal consequences.

You can find many publications about green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy and recycling. The database is therefore relevant for researchers interested, for example, in the influence of climate change on biodiversity or daily life in cities. In addition, the database has a multidisciplinary character: it makes a connection between environmental issues and different fields such as education, law, health, technology and social sciences.

Would you like to know more about the problem of the influence of climate change on sea level, which is very relevant in the Netherlands? Search for relevant publications with the keywords 'climate change' and 'sea level'.

Spatial Development students can find interesting articles about the relationship between climate change and biodiversity in urban environments using the combination of the keywords 'climate change', 'cities OR urban' and 'biodiversity'.

The urban population worldwide suffers the most from the effects of heat waves. With the keywords 'cities OR urban' and 'heat waves' you will find relevant information about this theme. This is an example of how this database should also arouse the interest of social scientists.

War for talent in U.S. hospitality business. Find out what's going on with Regional Business News

The Regional Bussiness News database allows you to search business magazines, newspapers and newswires published in both urban and rural regions in the United States and Canada. Find out what's going on in the U.S. hospitality industry right now in sources like the Journal of BusinessThe Washington Post and the Crain’s Chicago Business. Perhaps it can provide inspiration for your own study and research. The COVID-19 Pandemic as consumers self-isolate and restaurants close down has turned the U.S. hospitality industry upside down.

For example, employment in Illinois' leisure and hospitality industry dropped by more than 50%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. After pandemic, restaurants face a new threat: worker shortage. Former employees decided to take a different path, especially because they were underpaid before pandemic. Therefore, in order to regain their strength in terms of staffing levels, restaurants are increasing pay, offering more benefits or bonuses, and getting creative in where they search for talent. There are hospitality owners trying to recruit new employees through referral bonuses for existing employees. Any employee who brings a friend, family member, or even a former employee to apply for a job gets a $200 bonus if the job candidate gets hired and stays for at least 30 days. While restaurant owners are feeling the pinch of a shortage of workers, this could be a time of necessary change in the industry. It’s making business owners reflect on their culture, how they keep their employees, how to treat them right.

Taylor & Francis Online: female leadership

Women’s equal participation and leadership in political and public life are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.  However, data shows that women are underrepresented at all levels of decision-making worldwide, and achieving gender parity in political life is far off. Not only in the public sector but also in the business world there appears to be no improvement in the share of women in management positions.

Various articles that you can consult via the Taylor & Francis Online database demonstrates that studies reporting statistical significance of female leadership and gender representation in the workforce tend to find a positive impact on performance of public organizations and companies. But also that empirical findings on the link between gender diversity and performance have been inconsistent. And that the type of industry has a moderating effect on the relationship between gender diversity and performance. However, research is conducted into gender and business performance in specific industries such as family businesses or microbusinesses.

The Taylor & Francis Online Business, Management & Economics collection, which includes the above articles, contains more then 120 e-journals focused on topics such as accounting, business history, economics, finance, human resources, marketing and public management. Featured journals are Journal of AdvertisingEconomic Systems Research and Review of Social Economy. You can also use all kinds of tricks to get the most out of the database. Like the 'People also read', 'Recommended articles' and 'Cited by' on the right side of an article page to find popular, recommended and citing articles. This way you can easily find articles on the same theme. And when you select text on an article page, you automatically get a handy translation and dictionary option. This helps to correctly interpret the article.

Vakbase and Facto.nl

Vakbase is a portal of publisher Vakmedianet and is mainly used to access e-journals and a number of online publications in the fields of HRM, Employee Participation, Working Conditions, Facility, Management Support and Construction & Installation. Our license does not provide access to E-pubs. Click on a source to view the table of contents and access the full text. Or use the search function to search Vakbase in its entirety. The issues of ejournals in Vakbase can be downloaded off-campus, but unfortunately the viewer does not work properly. The library has also included all ejournals in the E-Publication Finder (the successor of the A-Z list of ejournals).

The databases overview now also includes Facto.nl, the site belonging to Facto magazine that can also be found in Vakbase. Via Facto.nl the magazine can be read easily. On HHs computers Edge works best for this.

Setting up alerts for legal databases

To avoid having to do a search yourself on a regular basis, you can set up alerts for new contents on a specific subject or a specific publication in a database. This is both time efficient and an easy way to stay up to date on a certain subject. In most databases you will need to do the following steps:

  1. Make a (free) personal account.
  2. Choose a relevant journal or a file to receive updates from. Or setup a search string (e.g. “higher education”).
  3. Choose the frequency and delivery method (e-mail or RSS-feed) and save your settings.

We have made an overview of a few international sources/databases where you can set up alerts.

Westlaw UK

In Westlaw UK you will automatically be logged in with your university account, making a personal account is therefore not necessary.

In Westlaw UK you can set up alerts for:

-          New results from a search query -> use the bell symbol that appears when a search has been conducted.

-          Subjects -> use the bell symbol that appears when subject is chosen.

-          Following cases -> choose the relevant case and click on the bell symbol.

It is not possible to set up TOC-alerts for journals, but a lot of these journals are available in other databases where you can set up an alert.

Westlaw International

In Westlaw International you will automatically be logged in with your university account, making a personal account is therefore not necessary.

Westlaw International you can set up alerts for: Administrative decisions & guidance, Arbitration materials, Briefs, Cases, Jury verdicts/settlements, Practical law, Proposed and enacted legislation or regulations, Secondary Sources and Statutes & Court rules.

To set up an alert, you can go the Alerts center by clicking on ‘Alerts’ in the upper right corner. Click on ‘Create Alert’ and choose what kind of alert you want (WestClip, KeyCite, Docket alert, Docket track of Publication Alert). After you have named your alert, you can choose the type of content of your alert (cases, statutes, decision, secondary sources etc.) by searching or browsing.

You can add a source by clicking on ‘ADD’ and the next step will be filling in a search string. When this is done, you can add information about wanted frequency (e-mail of RSS-feed) and other details on delivery.

HeinOnline

You can make a free account in HeinOnline in MyHein.

In HeinOnline you can set up alerts for:

-          New search results.

-          New journal editions.

If you do not want to make a personal account, you can set up alerts via RSS-feed.

Criminal Justice Database

It is not necessary to make a personal account in Criminal Justice Database to receive alerts. But if you want to adjust the string or make other changes, you need a personal account.

In Criminal Justice Database you can add alerts for::

-          New search results.

-          New journal editions.

You can choose between delivery via e-mail or an RSS-feed.

Public sources

Eur-Lex

Comply with the Copyright Act when using video content from others

If you, as a student, teacher or researcher, want to use video content from others, you must comply with the Copyright Act. In principle, this means that you must always request permission from the copyright holder(s) of the video content. Essentially the copyright holder is the creator of a work. A video can have multiple creators. From a simple video made by one person filming an object or the environment, for example, to a documentary or a film with a screenwriter, a director, actors and a producer. In the first case, that one person is the copyright owner. In the second case, the producer if the other creators have transferred their exploitation rights, part of their copyrights, to the producer (which often happens).

To keep it workable, the Copyright Act has a number of exceptions where permission is not required (restrictions on the Copyright Act). For example, there is the screening restriction that allows you to show the video content in its entirety without the permission of the copyright holder, provided that the screening has an educational purpose and takes place “within the walls” of the educational institution. In concrete terms, this means that you may play video content, for example a documentary, in its entirety in the classroom or in Teams or Blackboard Collaborate, provided that no recording takes place (so only screen sharing). As soon as a recording takes place or, for example, the presentation is shared with the video file (for example, by placing the presentation on Blackboard), permission must be requested from the copyright holder. Therefore, if you do not have permission, do not play video content during a recording and replace the video file with a link or a reference before sharing the presentation. In short, you can download video content without permission on your own device (can be useful if you do not want to be dependent on a good internet connection or if you want to make sure that the video content is available when you need it) and play it in its entirety for others in an educational context, but not without permission, share the video content in its entirety as a video file or make it available for others to view or replay via a recording.

Another exception to the Copyright Act that may apply to video content is the right to quote. Citation of video content can be used by students, teachers and researchers in a digital product. You do not have to ask for permission if you do not quote more than necessary, you quote from a published source and you mention the source. Unlike with the screening restriction, you can share that product or make it available to others. The risk lies in the condition that you may not quote more than necessary. The Copyright Act does not specify what is meant by this in concrete terms. There is also no golden standard from the numerous lawsuits filed by producers. Caution is therefore advised and asking for permission may be a safer option in this situation, even if it is not necessary to quote the video content in its entirety. In this situation it is better to use video content made available open access and/or under an open license. The main characteristic of open access works is that they are accessible and available without financial, legal or technical barriers. Open Access works can be recognized by the Open Access logo (an open lock). With an open license, the copyright holder makes it clear to everyone at once under what conditions the work may be used without the need for permission. The most common open license is the Creative Commons license. Filter for this license when searching for video content that requires sharing or making it available to others.

Looking for images for a presentation or paper? Have a look in CC Search

On the CC Search website, users can find images with Creative Commons licenses and images that are in the public domain. The search engine searches over 300 million images through open APIs and the Common Crawl dataset. Almost all of the footage comes from Flickr. CC Search also searches the databases of various museums, including the Rijksmuseum.

For the time being, CC Search is only suitable for searching images, but text and audio should also be available in the future. The goal of the Creative Commons organization is to eventually make all 1.4 billion works that have a CC license searchable. Useful are the search manual, which helps to find images, and the list of sources.

The images that can be found with the search engine can be used in presentations or publications, for example. In doing so, the stated CC conditions must be met. This may be, for example, attribution. CC does not verify that the images are properly licensed or that the information is correct or complete, so please check the licensing status and attribute information before reusing the content.

Extension of Web of Science: find more important scientific information

Citations establish links between related scientific literature. Through Clarivate’s citation index Web of Science influential literature can be easily traced. Web of Science contains bibliographic metadata from a large number of scientific research publications in all fields of science. The licence previously allowed access to content from the last 10 years but has now been extended to include backfiles from 1980 onwards. As a result, 65% more relevant records are available.

There are extensive possibilities to search and discover trends and patterns. For example, if you search for a topic and look at the "hot papers", you will see both the quoted literature and references to articles published later. And with Find it @ H\Library and/or EndNote Click (formerly: Kopernio), you can try to find the full text.

Web of Science can be used to determine the h-index, a measure for the impact of publications of a scientific researcher. And with the Journal Citation Reports the impact factor of a journal, an indication of its importance based on citation data. Via the Data Citation Index you can search over 380 data repositories worldwide.

The interface of Web of Science is being renewed step by step. See the comprehensive website for more.

A reliable full-text database in the field of sociology and communication? Then have a look at the “Social Science Database”!

Looking for international (scientific) articles, professional journals, dissertations or blogs in the field of sociology, psychology, communication, political science, criminology and social work? The Haagse Hogeschool library offers many Proquest databases in this area, but Social Science Database (SSD) mainly has many full-text articles from over 1800 international journals from 1980 onwards.

For example, if you are curious about background articles about virus deniers, this would be a useful search in SSD: (covid or corona) AND (conspiracy or denialists). As a result, you will find more than ca. 900 results, of which more than 130 scientific (peer-reviewed) articles and almost 100 of which are full text.

You can expand your search in one go to the other ten (!) Proquest databases in the sociological field via the option “Change databases” and then tick “Social Sciences Premium Collection” and “Exclude duplicate documents” (via 'Result page options' at the bottom, when you are back on the search page). This last action prevents the same article from appearing multiple times in your results.

With the same filters as above for SSD, full text and peer-reviewed, you now will find at over 190 unique results, of which about 100 come from SSD, so SSD was a great database for this subject!

In The Case Centre you will find a large number of cases in the field of business administration, marketing and management of universities and business schools worldwide. The case studies deal with real-life situations that confront the students with a dilemma or an uncertain outcome. A case often includes relevant documents, audiovisual items and carefully designed teaching notes. If you are interested in inspection copies or the use of the cases in education, please see the ordering procedure.
This database is really useful for Blended Learning. You can find more information on online teaching, the use and writing of cases on the website of The Case Centre.

Example of a case: Philips Healthcare: Global Sourcing in a Post-COVID-19 World
As a global leader in healthcare technology, Philips had an important role to play in the COVID-19 pandemic. The surge in demand for life-saving medical equipment by hospitals around the world presented high-stakes opportunities for the company. At the same time however, national governments in most countries were compelled to implement safety measures that greatly affected commercial activity. Philips' Healthcare business units, particularly in diagnostics and respiratory equipment, faced critical supply challenges during the Corona crisis which garnered media attention both at home and abroad. In order to capitalize on the high demand for medical equipment, CEO Frans van Houten knew that Philips needed to overcome several hurdles to produce and deliver enough inventory to meet that demand. Aware of the many challenges ahead, van Houten had to decide whether to revise the company's global sourcing strategy to future-proof it in a post-COVID-19 world - and, if so, how.

Voorbeeld van een case: Philips Healthcare: Global Sourcing in a Post-COVID-19 World

How to borrow books from the library of The Hague University of Applied Sciences

The library has a collection of more than 45,000 titles,  to support education and assignments. Most titles can be borrowed.  In addition to textbooks, there is also a small collection of novels and DVDs in many languages to support language teaching.

The library always has a reference copy of mandatory literature available for consultation. A second copy is available for loan but obviously does not meet the enormous demand of large numbers of students. A copy of the recommended literature and minors is included in the collection.

Do you want to know if a book is in the collection and available? Go to catalogue.hhl.nl and type in your search term(s). Combining terms is possible. But you can also refine afterwards on location, type of material or author. Search for example on ‘research’ and refine by author or type of material. For example on mandatory literature and/or e-book.

Is the publication you are searching for not in the catalogue or is it on loan?

Submit a purchase request or request it via the Interlibrary Borrowing Service (IBL).

Borrowing and returning materials is possible with the self-service systems. Students can borrow materials from the self-service systems using their digital student card. Employees can request a library card for use with the self-service systems. A maximum of 7 books can be borrowed and, if not reserved, extended to 5 times more.

In addition to the physical collection, the library also has a digital collection with more than 100 databases and a collection of e-books in various databases and individually purchased e-books in the catalogue.

Library Science – Everything about knowledge- and information management

The Library Science database provides access to over 200 publications about information science. For example see how students developed a information security course for small business ownersand detect fake news with the help of multi-objective hybrid feature approach. You could use these articles as input for assignments as part of Blended Learning, so that students are introduced in reading scientific/journal articles as part.

The international company and industry database MarketLine Advantage renewed and expanded

The international database MarketLine Advantage provides up-to-date and accurate information on companies, industries, countries and cities. The information about companies and industries is available in profiles, reports and case studies. The company information contains SWOT analyses. Also enclosed are trend and risk reports, news and information on financial deals.

With the new interface launched earlier this year new functions were introduced. The innovative Tableau interface presents data in flexible charts and tables that can be exported. For example, you can use Country Statistics (under Databases) to indicate for which region or countries you want to see the unemployment rate (or another macro-economic indicator). The data are then displayed in a map and table form. Further, a graph with the forecast of unemployment per region is included. In addition to these own graphs and tables, users can also compile their own reports via the Company Report Generator (under Databases).

The extension provides access to new content. The information about companies, industries, countries and cities is processed in well-arranged Chartbooks (under Analysis). For example, you can compare Amsterdam with other European cities in the Top 50 Europe City Chartbook. In addition to trend and risk reports, there are now also Value and Supply Chain Analysis (via Industry Analysis under Analysis). In it you can read, for example, that there is a need for typhoon-ready turbine technology or that you should look at the toy giant Toys 'R' Us as far as online retail is concerned. Finally, there is the new influencer tool (under Databases) where you can compile the top 100 influencers per sector based on their Twitter behaviour. CC Search: Search tool from Creative Commons with more than 300 million images

CC Search cannot be used in Internet Explorer, but it does work in Firefox and Edge!

CC Search is a search tool from Creative Commons in which more than 300 million images can be searched. For example, you can search in the collections of some museums and in Flickr. It is also possible to filter by type of license. There is a CC Search Syntax Guide, for help by searching.

CC does not yet check if the images are properly licensed or if the information is correct or complete, so check the license status and the attribute information before using the content.

For example, if you search with the search term "Nachtwacht" in the Rijksmuseum collection, you will find the following results Nachtwacht in collection Rijksmuseum.

The Case Centre : Teaching by means of cases

In The Case Centre you will find a large number of cases in the field of business administration, marketing and management of universities and business schools worldwide. Or try to reach a compromise with the Chinese government? How should a multinational company react when its core values conflict with the policies of the host government? What are the challenges in the relationship between business and government in an emerging economy? How can the reactions of different stakeholders in a crisis be assessed? And can scenarios be developed regarding the resolution of the crisis?

Are you a student looking for images for your report or thesis? Or do you, as a lecturer, want to illustrate the content of lectures in your presentation or syllabus with an image? That is possible, but you must take the Copyright Act into account. This law prescribes that if you use someone else's work, you must ask the creator of the work for permission and pay a fair compensation. The law has exceptions to this rule and within those exceptions the permission and fee have already been arranged for many images. For use that falls outside these exceptions, you can use images with a creative commons license. CC Search searches such images.

Right to quote and education exception

As a student you make use of the right to quote. You can then use any image, for example a diagram or illustration from a book or article. You must mention the source.

As a lecturer you make use of the education exception. The Hague University of Applied Sciences has already obtained permission through the reader agreement and has paid a fair compensation. You may use a maximum of 25 images in your presentation or syllabus, of which up to 5 images from the same creator. Source citation is mandatory.

CC Search

However, you may not use the right to quote or the education exception when the image is purely for decoration. Consider, for example, an image on the cover of your report or thesis as a student and a cheerful picture or cartoon for in your presentation as a lecturer. You need permission from the creator to use this images. Many creators give this permission in advance, with a creative commons license. Use the search engine CC Search to find these images. The search engine searches more than 300 million images.
