KIVI Symposium: Collaborating for a Healthy Future
20 March 2025
KIVI Annual Congress 2025! From circular construction to sustainable mobility – working together for a healthier world.

On March 12, the annual KIVI Symposium took place—a day of inspiration where engineers, researchers, and students gathered around the theme ‘Creating a healthy world together’. From circular construction methods to sustainable mobility solutions, the focus was on innovations contributing to a healthier and more sustainable world.
Innovation through Collaboration
The day was opened by KIVI President Jacolien Eijer-de Jong and board member Arend Hardorff. Rob van Kampen, program manager of Built Environment at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary and intercultural collaboration in his speech: “Innovation emerges at the boundaries of disciplines. By working together across sectors and countries, we create solutions for a sustainable future.”
Students in the Spotlight
During the first session round, former students presented their award-winning graduation projects:
- Britta Hollebeek – Urban Heat: Façade Design Inspired by Nature
Britta designed an innovative façade that blocks sunlight and accelerates façade cooling, inspired by biomimicry. Her design contributes to energy-efficient building applications. - Thomas Krčevinac – Earth, Wind & Fire in Education
Thomas developed an educational module on the innovative Earth, Wind & Fire ventilation system. His research led to its integration into the curricula of multiple universities of applied sciences and Delft University of Technology. - Tyra Polderman – The Hague University of Applied Sciences: Paris Proof & Gas-Free
Tyra researched how The Hague University of Applied Sciences could become fully energy-neutral and gas-free. Her simulation model supports the sustainability transition of the 80,000 m² building.
Festive Conclusion
The day ended on a celebratory note with the presentation of the Prince Johan Friso Engineering Award to Meike Nauta, in the presence of Princess Beatrix and Princess Mabel. Both the jury and public prizes were awarded to Meike for her outstanding contribution to sustainable engineering.
The KIVI Symposium once again demonstrated how innovation and collaboration are key to building a healthier world. We are already looking forward to the next edition!
