On March 11th, The Hague University of Applied Sciences officially launched the Comenius Leadership Project Relational Peer Mediation. This innovative initiative promotes affective learning, empathy, and conflict resolution through peer mediation, inspired by the Pedagogy of Discomfort and the Multilevel Regulation Approach.

Mediation is not just about resolving conflicts—it’s about creating opportunities for deeper understanding. When we step into each other’s shoes, we find common ground where we least expect it.

A moment of connection and reflection

The launch event brought together students, lecturers, and project partners to explore how inclusive and socially just learning environments can be fostered. Highlights included:

  • Emotion sharing – Participants reflected on their feelings by writing them on post-it notes, increasing emotional awareness.
  • Personal stories – Student leaders and lecturers shared what the project means to them on a personal level.
  • Project vision – Dr. Barbara Warwas, project co-creator, explained how peer mediation supports inclusive education and social justice.
  • Film & discussion – Using clips from The Breakfast Club, participants explored how uncomfortable conversations can lead to insight and growth.
  • Simulation exercise – Attendees practiced peer mediation through a challenging educational scenario.

Student voices

First-year student Maxima Obholz reflected on the experience:
"It was surprising to reflect on emotions by writing them down. I rarely take time to do that, and it brought clarity. I also enjoyed the group discussions—we stepped into different roles and gained hands-on experience. I’d love to learn more about the upcoming peer mediation workshops!"

What’s next?

  • Workshops & training sessions – For students and staff to build active listening and conflict resolution skills.
  • Story-sharing forums – Safe spaces for expressing discomfort, fostering resilience and empathy.
  • Peer Mediation Clinic – A long-term support system to embed sustainable mediation practices within THUAS.
