HyUSE
Use of hydrogen as a fuel for mobility and for stand-alone energy systems
Objective
With the Paris Agreement serving as a guideline for climate action, we aim for an ambitious transition to sustainable energy, with hydrogen playing a crucial role.
At present, hydrogen (H2) applications are in the development phase, and their market introduction remains limited. Therefore, urgent intensification of research and development in end-use technologies for hydrogen and hydrogen-based energy carriers is necessary.
The Green Power NL program emphasizes the opportunity for the Netherlands to play a significant role in global developments in green hydrogen. The objective of Work Package 3 (WP3) within the Green Power NL R&D program is to investigate how hydrogen can be used as a fuel in industry, heavy transport, and local energy provisions in the future. The project aims to directly contribute to timely achieving climate targets and strengthening the Dutch economy.
Target Group
The target audience of this project includes various stakeholders, including:
Governments and policymakers: They can use the research results and recommendations to formulate policies and develop regulations that support the transition to hydrogen as a fuel.
Industry and businesses: They can benefit from the developed technologies and insights to integrate hydrogen into their activities, such as in industry, heavy transport, and local energy provision.
Greenhouse sector: Specifically for this project, greenhouse companies can benefit from the developed hydrogen installation and associated knowledge to implement more sustainable energy solutions in their operations.
Duration
Start date: May 2024. The project has a duration of 6 years.
Funding
Due to a subsidy of over €14 million from Green Power NL, along with contributions from the industry and other institutions, the program has a total budget of over €16.5 million.
Results
The involvement of the HHS is primarily focused on designing and testing a hydrogen installation for greenhouse horticulture. This pilot installation is being developed and tested in collaboration with the University of Utrecht and Koppert Cress.
The findings of this research will be presented in various ways, including reports, articles, workshops, modeling tools, policy briefs, and whitepapers.
