METACOG: AI Literacy and the fight Against disinformation
The METACOG project enhances AI literacy in Europe, equipping citizens, students, and educators to recognize disinformation. Supported by Erasmus+, a coalition develops practical tools and innovative teaching methods.
Centre of Expertise Global and Inclusive Learning
The METACOG project, with contributions from lecturer-researchers Kanan Dhru and Jeffrey Dahl of the Multilevel Regulation research group, focuses on developing an AI literacy program for European citizens. Supported by Erasmus+ funding, a coalition of four universities and colleges is working on innovative educational tools to better equip higher education students and lecturers to identify and counter disinformation and fake news.
Why METACOG?
With the rise of generative AI and advanced language models capable of producing credible yet misleading information, it is essential to adapt our educational practices. This project addresses the urgent need for AI literacy by providing higher education students and the broader public with tools to critically analyze and validate AI-generated content.
Objective
The METACOG project aims to enhance AI literacy across Europe, with a specific focus on identifying and combating disinformation. It seeks to raise awareness of digital threats, thereby fostering civic participation and shared values. By developing innovative educational resources, METACOG strives to provide practical tools and insights applicable in both education and society at large.
Activities and outputs
The project is developing and testing a broad range of materials and methods, including an AI literacy curriculum and a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course). Additionally, at least four webinars will be organized, and a comprehensive toolkit, including a teacher’s manual and handbook, will be created. These resources will be tested in collaboration with an international consortium of 120 students and 10 lecturers from four universities. Through these efforts, METACOG contributes to enhancing digital awareness and resilience against disinformation across European societies.
Project partners
METACOG is implemented by a strong international consortium:
- Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, Finland
- Technical University of Košice, Slovakia
- University of Montenegro, Montenegro
- The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands
Contribution to society
The METACOG project recognizes the dual role of AI in both creating and combating disinformation. Through dissemination activities and collaboration, the project aims to increase awareness of AI literacy, contributing to the resilience of European societies against fake news.
