Tuition fees
Let’s talk finances. Enrolling on a degree programme at THUAS also means that you must pay tuition fees. The information on this page applies to all bachelor and AD programmes at the Hague University of Applied Sciences, the master’s programme Next Level Engineering, and the Dutch-taught master's program Integrale Bedrijfsvoering. There are 3 different fees:
2023-2024 | 2024-2025 | |
Statutory tuition fee | € 2,314,- | € 2.530,- |
Reduced statutory fee* | € 1,157,- | - |
Institutional tuition fee | € 9.045,- | € 9.889,- |
*Starting from the academic year 2024-2025 (September 1, 2024), the reduced statutory fee will be discontinued.
You’ll either pay the statutory tuition fee set by the government or an institutional tuition fee set by THUAS. Criteria that are used to set the institution fee are: the statutory fee and the government funding that the university otherwise would have received, inclusivity and access, as well as simplicity and transparency. These amounts are reviewed every year.
Which fee applies to you?
How much you pay depends on three things - your nationality, if you have a higher education diploma and the degree programme you’ve chosen.
You may pay the statutory tuition fee if…
- you’re an EU national, from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Suriname or Switzerland, or are eligible for student finance with your Dutch residence permit. For this you need a Type II, III, IV or V Dutch residence permit or, in some cases, a Type I residence permit.
- you don’t have an associate or bachelor’s degree from a university in the Netherlands at the start of your bachelor’s degree programme, or you don’t already have an associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree from a university in the Netherlands at the start of your associate degree programme, or you don't already have a master's degree from from a university in the Netherlands at the start of the Dutch-taught master's program Integrale Bedrijfsvoering.
- this is the first time you’re enrolling in a bachelor’s degree or study programme in healthcare. You’ll pay the statutory tuition fee even if you already have a bachelor’s degree
How much tuition fees you will have to pay is based on the information known at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. In case of relevant changes in this information, the tuition fees will be adjusted accordingly.
Please refer to the website of the Dutch government for information on the impact of Brexit on tuition fees for British nationals.
You set up a direct debit authorization:
If you’ve a bank account with an IBAN number in an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Monaco, or San Marino or the United Kingdom, you can set up a direct debit payment to allow us to deduct the fees from your account on the agreed dates. This can be done via Studielink as of 1 June.
You can choose to pay your tuition fees all at once, or in nine instalments.
An overview of the dates and amounts of each tuition fee instalment is available on our FAQs page. Before each instalment, please make sure to have sufficient funds in your account. If you miss a payment, please also refer to our FAQs to find out what to do.
Your employer will pay for tuition fees:
We can send an invoice. Please complete a guarantor declaration together with your employer and return it to us.
You are also enrolled at another Dutch university and have paid tuition fees there:
If you are eligible to pay the (reduced) statutory tuition fee then you can ask the other university to issue a proof of tuition fee payment (in Dutch: BBC). Send the original BBC to the Enrolment Centre and then your payment obligation has been met. If you need THUAS to issue a BBC for another university, please contact the Enrolment Centre.
You will transfer the tuition fee to THUAS’s bank account:
Setting up a direct debit via Studielink is only possible if you have a bank account in the countries mentioned above. If your bank is in another country, you’ll need to pay the entire balance in one go. Please find full payment instructions on the confirmation form and don't forget to send a copy of the bank transfer along with the confirmation form.
Your tuition fee is part of your package fee payment:
If you need THUAS to apply for your Dutch residence permit (and entry visa), you will usually be asked to pay a package fee that includes your tuition fee.
Reduced statutory fee
Do you qualify for the statutory rate and are you entering Dutch higher education for the first time? Then you qualify for a 50% discount in tuition fees. You’ll be charged the reduced statutory fee for your first year of enrolment. If you’re starting a Dutch-taught teacher education programme you qualify for an additional year of 50% reduction of the tuition fee.
Please note: After this period you’ll have to pay the full statutory rate. You can find more information on the government website.

Some important notes:
- Please make sure you arrange your payment as soon as possible, but no later than 31 August, or you won’t be able to start on 1 September. Exception: Package fee payments have an earlier deadline.
- If your enrolment starts at a later date than 1 September, your tuition fees will be changed accordingly. For each month of enrolment you will be charged 1/12th of the applicable tuition fee.
Changed your mind about studying at THUAS or disenrolling during the academic year?
Decided not to start your studies after all? That’s a shame. Do make sure to disenroll via Studielink before the start date of your enrolment (typically 1 September) though to make sure you won’t be charged. If you are still enrolled on that date, you are liable to pay tuition fees up to and including the month during which you submit your disenrolment request – even if you’re not actually taking part in classes.
If you are eligible for the reduced tuition fee it is especially important to disenroll in time. If you are enrolled in the month of September yet decide not to take up your studies in that academic year, then you no longer qualify for the 50% reduction in the following academic year.
For each month that you are enrolled you will be charged 1/12th of the applicable tuition fee. This means that the month during which you submit your disenrolment request via Studielink is the last month for which you will have to pay.
If up and until the date of disenrolment you have paid more tuition fees then you had to, you are eligible for a refund of the excess amount. The Student Accounts Receivable Department will automatically transfer any balance due to the bank account used to pay for the tuition fee. More information is available on the Student Portal.
